তুলনামূলক (Comparative) ব্যবহার করা হয় দু'টি উপাদান-এর মধ্যে তুলনা করার জন্য, যেখানে একটি বৈশিষ্ট্য আরেকটির চেয়ে বেশি, কম, বা সমান। এর গঠন নির্ভর করে ব্যবহৃত Adjektiv (বিষেশণ)-এর দৈর্ঘ্য ও ধরনের ওপর।
১. ছোট বিষেশণ দিয়ে দুইটি জিনিসের তুলনা
একটি Adjektiv ছোট বলে গণ্য হয়, যদি তা:
- একটি মাত্র syllable হয় (small, big, tall)
- দুইটি syllable থাকে এবং শেষে -y হয় (happy, easy, funny)
ছোট বিষেশণ দিয়ে তুলনামূলক গঠনের নিয়ম:
A. যদি বিষেশণ একটি মাত্র syllable হয়
তুলনামূলক শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব তৈরি করতে "er" যোগ করে "than" বসানো হয়।

B. যদি বিষেশণ একটি syllable এবং শেষে consonant থাকে
Consonant + vowel + consonant গঠনের ছোট বিষেশণ হলে তুলনামূলক শ্রেষ্ঠত্বে শেষ consonant দ্বিগুণ করা হয়, তারপর "er" যোগ করি।

C. যদি বিষেশণ দুইটি syllable এবং শেষে -y থাকে
দুই syllable এবং শেষে "-y" থাকলে, “y” বাদ দিয়ে “i” যোগ করে “er” ও “than” বসাতে হয়।

২. বড় বিষেশণ দিয়ে দুইটি জিনিসের তুলনা
একটি Adjektiv “বড়” বলে গণ্য হয় যদি দুই syllable বা তার বেশি হয় এবং শেষে “-y” না থাকে (important, expensive, comfortable ইত্যাদি)।

৩. তুলনামূলক ক্ষেত্রে অনিয়মিত বিষেশণ
কিছু বিষেশণ রয়েছে যেগুলোর তুলনামূলক ও superlative গঠন অনিয়মিত। নিচে প্রধানগুলো দেওয়া হলো:

৪. তুলনামূলকের বিভিন্ন প্রকার
A. কমত্বের তুলনামূলক: « কম ... থেকে »
তুলনামূলক কমত্ব গঠনের জন্য less + বিষেশণ + than ব্যবহার করা হয়। এই নিয়ম সব বিষেশণ-এর জন্য প্রযোজ্য।
- This chair is less comfortable than the armchair.
(এই চেয়ারটি আরামকেদার চেয়ে কম আরামদায়ক) - He is less patient than his brother.
(সে তার ভাইয়ের চেয়ে কম ধৈর্যশীল)
B. সমতার তুলনামূলক: « সমান ... যত » / « সমান ... যত »
তুলনামূলক সমতা বোঝায় দু’টি উপাদানের বৈশিষ্ট্য এক।
- Nomen দিয়ে: the same + Nomen + as
- She bought the same dress as me.
(সে আমার মতোই একই পোশাক কিনেছে)
- She bought the same dress as me.
- Adjektiv দিয়ে: as + Adjektiv + as
- The task is as difficult as I thought.
(কাজটি আমার ভাবনার মতোই কঠিন)

বৈচিত্র্য
তুলনামূলক সমতা প্রকাশ করতে কয়েকটি বৈচিত্র্য রয়েছে:
- নেতিবাচক রূপ: not as ... as (≃ less ... than)
- It is not as effective as we expected
(এটি আমাদের প্রত্যাশার মতো কার্যকর নয়)
- It is not as effective as we expected
- প্রায় সমান: almost / nearly as + Adjektiv + as
- The project is nearly as complex as the last one.

পরিমাণ তুলনা
পরিমাণ তুলনা করতে as much as ব্যবহার করা হয় অগণ্য Nomen-এর জন্য এবং as many as ব্যবহার করা হয় গণ্য Nomen-এর জন্য।
- “As much as” অগণ্য Nomen-এ:
- She earns as much money as her colleague.
(সে তার সহকর্মীর মতোই আয় করে) - This recipe requires as much sugar as the other one.
(এই রেসিপিটিতে অন্যটির মতোই চিনি লাগে)
- She earns as much money as her colleague.
- “As many as” গণ্য Nomen-এ:
- He has as many responsibilities as his manager.
(তার ম্যানেজারের মতোই দায়িত্ব আছে) - There were as many guests at the party as last year.
(দাওয়াতে গত বছরের মতোই অতিথি ছিল)

C. « দিন দিন কমছে... », « দিন দিন বাড়ছে... »
প্রগতি বা হ্রাস বোঝাতে comparative + and + comparative গঠন ব্যবহার হয়।
- It is getting colder and colder outside.
(বাইরে দিন দিন ঠান্ডা বাড়ছে) - The city is becoming more and more crowded.
(শহরটি দিন দিন বেশি ভিড় হচ্ছে) - He is getting less and less interested in his job.
(তার কাজের প্রতি দিন দিন আগ্রহ কমছে)
D. « যত বেশি..., তত বেশি... » ও « যত বেশি..., তত কম... »
কারণ ও ফলাফলের সম্পর্ক বোঝাতে the + comparative, the + comparative গঠন ব্যবহার হয়।
- The healthier you eat, the better you feel.
(তুমি যত স্বাস্থ্যকর খাবে, তত ভালো অনুভব করবে) - The more experience you have, the easier it gets.
(তোমার যত বেশি অভিজ্ঞতা হবে, তত সহজ হবে) - The faster you run, the more exhausted you get.
(তুমি যত দ্রুত দৌড়াবে, তত বেশি ক্লান্ত হবে)
E. তুলনামূলককে আরও সূক্ষ্মভাবে প্রকাশ
আরও সূক্ষ্ম তুলনা করতে কিছু Adverb যেমন slightly, a bit, somewhat, much, far, a great deal তুলনামূলকের আগে বসানো যায়।
- This jacket is slightly more expensive than the other one.
(এই জ্যাকেটটি অন্যটির তুলনায় কিছুটা বেশি দামী) - The problem is far more complex than expected.
(সমস্যাটি প্রত্যাশার তুলনায় অনেক বেশি জটিল) - This laptop is a bit faster than my old one.
(এই ল্যাপটপটি আমার পুরাতনটির তুলনায় কিছুটা দ্রুত)
"even" দিয়ে জোর দেওয়া
- The situation is even worse than we thought.
(পরিস্থিতি আমাদের ভাবনার চেয়েও খারাপ)
"any" অথবা "no" দিয়ে পার্থক্য না থাকলে
- The new version is no better than the previous one.
(নতুন সংস্করণটি আগেরটির চেয়ে ভালো নয়) - We can’t wait any longer for an answer.
(আমরা আর বেশি অপেক্ষা করতে পারছি না)
F. পরিমাণ তুলনা (গণ্য ও অগণ্য Nomen)
পরিমাণ ও পরিমাণের তুলনা করতে more, less, fewer, not as much as, not as many as ইত্যাদি ব্যবহার হয়।
- গণ্য Nomen-এর জন্য (fewer, more, many)
- We need to hire more employees this year.
(এ বছর আমাদের আরও কর্মী নিয়োগ দিতে হবে) - There are fewer opportunities in this industry than before.
(এ শিল্পে আগের তুলনায় কম সুযোগ আছে) - She doesn’t have as many tasks as her colleague.
(তার সহকর্মীর তুলনায় তার কম কাজ আছে)
- We need to hire more employees this year.
- অগণ্য Nomen-এর জন্য (less, more, much)
- He has more patience than I do.
(সে আমার তুলনায় বেশি ধৈর্যশীল) - We should consume less sugar.
(আমাদের কম চিনি খাওয়া উচিত) - We didn’t gain as much profit as last year.
(আমরা গত বছরের তুলনায় কম মুনাফা করেছি)
- He has more patience than I do.
উপসংহার
সবশেষে, Comparative ব্যবহার করে ইংরেজি ভাষায় দু’টি উপাদান তুলনা করা যায় বিভিন্নভাবে:
- কমত্বের তুলনা (less ... than) → “কম ... থেকে” প্রকাশে
- সমতার তুলনা (as ... as) → “সমান ... যত” প্রকাশে
- বিভিন্ন রূপ যেমন "প্রায় সমান" (almost/nearly as), "একেবারে সমান" (just as)
