ইংরেজিতে Quantifiers নিয়ে কোর্স - TOEIC® প্রস্তুতি

Quantifiers হল এমন শব্দ বা প্রকাশভঙ্গি যা পরিমাণ (বেশি, কম, অনির্দিষ্ট, নির্দিষ্ট ইত্যাদি) নির্দেশ করে একটি Nomen-এর আগে। ইংরেজিতে এগুলো খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কারণ, তথ্য স্পষ্ট করতে বা পুনরাবৃত্তি এড়াতে এদের ব্যবহার হয়। এই কোর্সটি সম্পূর্ণ: আমরা সব বৃহত্তম quantifiers, তাদের বিশেষত্ব এবং ব্যতিক্রম নিয়ে আলোচনা করব।

1. প্রাথমিক ধারণা : Countable Noun ও Uncountable Noun

Quantifiers-এর বিস্তারিত বোঝার আগে, এই পার্থক্যটা জানা জরুরি:

• Countable Noun (দেয়া যায় এমন Nomen) : বিভিন্ন ইউনিটে গুনা যায় (book, apple, table ইত্যাদি)।
  • I have two books (countable)।
• Uncountable Noun (গোনা যায় না এমন Nomen) : এককভাবে গুনা যায় না (water, information, advice ইত্যাদি)।
  • I need some water (uncountable)।

কিছু quantifiers শুধুমাত্র countable nouns-এর সাথে ব্যবহার হয়, কিছু শুধুমাত্র uncountable nouns-এর সাথে, আবার কিছু উভয়ের সাথেই ব্যবহার হয়।

2. মূল Quantifiers

A. Some

« Some » সাধারণত Affirmative sentence-এ countable nouns (plural) অথবা uncountable nouns-এর সাথে ব্যবহার করা হয়, যেখানে একটা অনির্দিষ্ট কিন্তু শূন্য নয় এমন পরিমাণ বোঝানো হয়।

• I have some friends in London.
  (বন্ধুর সংখ্যা নির্দিষ্ট নয়, তবে একাধিক)
• We bought some fruits at the market.

Questions-এ Some ব্যবহার করা যায় যখন প্রস্তাব দেয়া হয় বা বিষয়টি ইতিবাচক উত্তর আশা করা হয়।

• Would you like some coffee?
  (ভদ্র প্রস্তাব, উত্তর ‘হ্যাঁ' আশা করা হচ্ছে)

B. Any

« Any » সাধারণত Interrogative এবং Negative sentence-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়। Affirmative-এ « কোনো » বা « যেকোনো » অর্থে আসে।

• Negative-এ, any মানে « কোনো নয় » (শূন্য)।
  • I don’t have any money.
    (শূন্য)
• Interrogative-এ, « কোনো পরিমাণ » বোঝায়।
  • Do you have any questions?
    (কিছু প্রশ্ন, সংখ্যা অজানা)
• Affirmative-এ « যেকোনো » বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, বিশেষ করে can/could-এর সাথে (You can choose any book.)।
  • You can pick any movie you like.
    (যেকোনো একটা)

C. No

« No » মানে সম্পূর্ণ অনুপস্থিতি, countable ও uncountable nouns-এর সাথে ব্যবহার হয়। Negative sentence-এ not ... any-এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহার করা যায়।

• I have no time to waste.
  (আমার নষ্ট করার মতো সময় নেই)
• There are no cookies left.
  (আর কোনো কুকি নেই)

D. None

« None » একা (Quantifier Pronoun) বা of + noun/pronoun-এর পরে আসে, « একটিও নয় », « কোনোটি নয় » বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• How many cookies are left? - None.
  

None-এর পরে of + pronoun (them, us, you) আসতে পারে

• None of them wanted to come.
  

Of + definite article (the, my, these...)-এর সাথেও আসতে পারে

• None of the students passed the test.
  

3. বড় পরিমাণের Quantifiers

A. A lot of / Lots of

« A lot of / Lots of » মানে « অনেক »। Informal ব্যবহার, এবং countable/uncountable nouns-এর সাথে আসে। « Lots of » একটু বেশি informal।

• I have a lot of books to read.
  (countable)
• There is lots of water in the fridge.
  (uncountable)

B. Much

« Much » সাধারণত uncountable nouns-এর সাথে আসে, বড় পরিমাণ বোঝাতে। সাধারণত negative বা interrogative sentences-এ ব্যবহৃত হয় (affirmative-এ a lot of বেশি ব্যবহার হয়)।

• I don’t have much time.
  (negative)
• Do we have much information about this issue?
  (interrogative)

Formal register-এ বা adverb-সহ Affirmative-এ much আসতে পারে (Much progress has been made.)।

• Much effort was required to complete the project.
  (affirmative, formal)

C. Many

« Many » plural countable nouns-এর সাথে « অনেক » অর্থে। Much-এর মতোই, সাধারণত Interrogative/Negative sentences-এ বা Formal Affirmative-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• I don’t have many friends here.
• Are there many options available?
• Many people believe this to be true.
  (Formal)

D. Plenty of

« Plenty of » মানে « যথেষ্ট পরিমাণে », « পরিপূর্ণ », countable ও uncountable nouns-এর সাথে। Positive connotation, অর্থাৎ পর্যাপ্ত বা বেশি আছে।

• We have plenty of chairs for everyone.
• There is plenty of food left for dinner.

4. ছোট পরিমাণের Quantifiers

A. Few / A few

• « few »-এর মানে নিতান্তই কম, প্রায় অপর্যাপ্ত, এবং plural countable nouns-এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• I have few friends in this town.
  (বলছে খুবই কম আছে, অপর্যাপ্ত)

• « a few »-এর মানে কম কিন্তু পর্যাপ্ত/পূর্ণ/গ্রহণযোগ্য।

  • I have a few friends in this town.
    (কিছু আছে, ইতিবাচক)

B. Little / A little

• « little » মানে « খুবই কম », uncountable nouns-এর সাথে এবং নেতিবাচক/অপর্যাপ্ত মনোভাব।
  • We have little time left.
    (প্রায় সময় নেই)
• « a little » মানে « কিছুটা », Positive/Enough মনোভাব।
  • We have a little time left, so we can talk.
    (কিছুটা সময়, যথেষ্ট)

C. Enough

« Enough » মানে যথেষ্ট পরিমাণ, না কম না বেশি। Countable এবং Uncountable nouns-এর সাথে ব্যবহার হয়। অবস্থান:

• Noun-এর আগে → Enough money, enough chairs
  • We have enough chairs for everyone.
    (Countable)
  • There isn’t enough food for all the guests.
    (Uncountable)
• Adjective/adverb-এর পরে → Strong enough, fast enough
  • She is not strong enough to lift the box.
    (Adjective-এর পরে)
  • You didn’t run fast enough to win the race.
    (Adverb-এর পরে)
• Verb-এর সাথে
  • Do we have enough?

5. সংখ্যালঘু বা সর্বসমষ্টির Quantifiers

A. All

« All » মানে « সব », « সম্পূর্ণ »। Nomen, pronoun বা Verb-এর পরে আসে (গঠন অনুযায়ী)। সাধারণত: All (of) + determiner + noun (All the students, All my money) বা All of them/us/you।

• All the students passed the exam.
• I need all the information you have.
• We spent all our money.
• All of them agreed with the proposal.

B. Most

« Most » মানে « অধিকাংশ », « সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ »। of-সহ বা Most (of) the... বা Most people... (indefinite noun-এ of ছাড়া)।

• Most people like chocolate.
  (অপরিচিত noun)
• Most of the people at the meeting disagreed.
  (পরিচিত noun "the people")

C. Half

« Half » মানে « অর্ধেক »। of-সহ বা ছাড়া, যেমন: Half (of) + noun/determiner, বা “a half”।

• Half the cake was gone.
• Half of my friends couldn’t attend the party.
• They drank half a bottle of wine.

D. Whole

« Whole » মানে কোনো বস্তু বা ধারণার সম্পূর্ণতা, সাধারণত determiner (the, my, this...) সহ। Singular countable noun-এর সাথে আসে (the whole book, my whole life)। অবস্থান:

• Determiner ও noun-এর মাঝে → The whole city, My whole career
  • I read the whole book in one day.
  • She spent her whole life in New York.
• Pronominal phrase + of → Whole of the country (formal)।
  • The whole of the team supports this decision.
• Uncountable noun ও determiner ছাড়া ব্যবহৃত হয় না (✗ Whole water, কিন্তু ✓ The whole glass of water)।

« whole » ও « all »-এর পার্থক্য:

• All আসে plural এবং uncountable nouns-এর সাথে (All the books, All the information)।
  • I read all the books in the series.
    (সব বই)
• Whole আসে singular nouns-এর সাথে (The whole book)।
  • I read the whole book yesterday.
    (একটা সম্পূর্ণ বই)

6. Distributive Quantifiers: Each, Every, Either, Neither

A. Each

« Each » মানে একটি গোষ্ঠীর সব উপাদান, তবে একে একে। সাধারণত:

• Singular countable noun-এর পরে
  • Each student has a unique ID.
• of + determiner/pronoun-এর পরে
  • Each of my friends is invited.
    (each of-এর পরে verb singular)
• Verb 3rd person singular (কারণ each + singular noun)
  • Each student receives a personal laptop.

B. Every

« Every »-এর অর্থ each-এর মতো, কিন্তু গোষ্ঠীকে একক ভাবে দেখে, সামগ্রিক। Singular countable noun-এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত।

• Every child needs love.
• Every house on this street looks the same.

« Every » ও « Each »-এর পার্থক্য:

• « Every » গোষ্ঠীকে একসাথে দেখে।
• « Each » আলাদাভাবে প্রতিটি উপাদানকে গুরুত্ব দেয়।

C. Either

« Either » মানে « যে কোনো একটি » (দুইয়ের মধ্যে)। সাধারনত singular noun-এর সাথে (একটি উপাদান)। দুইভাবে ব্যবহার:

• Either + singular noun
  • You can choose either option.
    (একটা বা অন্যটা)
• Either of + determiner + noun/plural/pronoun (এখানে verb singular/ plural, তবে singular বেশি প্রচলিত)
  • Either of these two dresses is fine.
    (verb সাধারণত singular)

D. Neither

« Neither » মানে « কোনোটি নয় », ব্যবহারের পদ্ধতি:

• Neither + singular noun
  • Neither option is acceptable.
• Neither of + determiner + noun
  • Neither of them wants to go.

7. « একাধিক », « বিভিন্ন » Quantifiers

A. Several

« Several » মানে « বেশ কয়েকটি » (দুই-তিনের বেশি)। Plural countable noun-এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত।

• I have several ideas to improve the project.
• They visited several countries last year.

B. Various

« Various » মানে « একাধিক ও বিভিন্ন »। Various + plural noun ব্যবহার হয় (বৈচিত্র্য বোঝাতে)।

• She has various interests, including music and painting.
• We considered various solutions to the problem.

8. Numerical Quantifiers

One, two, three... : এগুলোকেও quantifier ধরা যায় কারণ এগুলো পরিমাণ নির্দেশ করে। মাঝে মাঝে dozens of, hundreds of, thousands of ধরনের structure-এ ব্যবহার হয় (বড় পরিমাণ বোঝাতে)

• I have three siblings.
• He wants to buy two new chairs.

9. পরিমাণের তুলনা: fewer/less, more

A. More

« More » মানে তুলনামূলকভাবে বেশি, countable ও uncountable nouns-এর সাথে ব্যবহার হয়।

• We need more chairs for the conference.
• I need more time to finish.

B. Fewer / Less

« Fewer » ও « less » মানে কম; পার্থক্য:

• Fewer আসে plural countable noun-এর সাথে।
• Less আসে uncountable noun-এর সাথে।

তবে spoken English-এ fewer-এর বদলে less-ও countable noun-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়, যদিও formal context-এ তা ভুল।

• We have fewer students this year.
  (plural countable)
• We have less money than expected.
  (uncountable)

10. Pronoun-এর সাথে Quantifier

Quantifiers অনেক সময় pronoun-এর সাথে যুক্ত হয়, যেমন:

• Quantifier + of + pronoun
  • All of them / Most of them / Some of them / Both of them
  • Many of us / A few of us / Several of us
• Quantifier + of + determiner + noun
  • Each of the students / Some of the students / All of the students

11. অন্যান্য Quantifiers ও প্রকাশভঙ্গি

A. A great deal of / A large amount of

« A great deal of » এবং « A large amount of » formal context-এ uncountable noun-এর সাথে বড় পরিমাণ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• We spent a great deal of time on this project.
• They wasted a large amount of money.

B. A (great) number of

« A great number of » মানে « অনেক », plural countable noun-এর সাথে, formal context-এ।

• A number of students are absent today.
• A great number of people attended the concert.
  (আরও বেশি)

C. A couple of

« A couple of » মানে « কয়েকটি », সাধারণত দুই বা তিন (কম পরিমাণ) বোঝায়।

• We stayed there for a couple of days.
• I need a couple of volunteers.

D. Dozens of / Hundreds of / Thousands of

« Dozens of », « hundreds of », « thousands of » মানে বড় পরিমাণ (প্রায়) বোঝাতে।

• He received dozens of emails this morning.
• She has hundreds of books in her library.
• They donated thousands of dollars to charity.

E. The majority of / The minority of

« The majority of » / « The minority of » formal context-এ « সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ / সংখ্যালঘু » বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• The majority of citizens voted for him.
• The minority of members disagreed.

12. কিছু Quantifier-এর পরে Verb-এর রূপ

• « each » - « every » - « either » - « neither »-এর পরে Verb সাধারণত singular হয়।
  • Each student has a book.
  • Every day brings new opportunities.
  • Neither answer is correct.
  • Either option is acceptable.
• « all » - « most » - « some » - « a lot of » - « plenty of » - « none »:
  • Plural countable noun-এর পরে → verb plural
    • All the students are here
  • Singular uncountable noun-এর পরে → verb singular
    • Most of the water is contaminated
  • Pronoun-এর পরে → pronoun plural হলে, verb plural
    • All of them want to come

13. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিশেষত্ব ও সূক্ষ্ম পার্থক্য

1. Some vs Any Affirmative sentence-এ
   • Some মানে « কিছু », « নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ »।
   • Any মানে « যেকোনো »।
2. Double Negation
   • Standard English-এ I don’t have no money বলা যায় না। বরং:
     • I don’t have any money.
     • I have no money.
3. None + Verb
   • None-এর পরে verb singular বা plural হতে পারে। Traditional rule-এ singular, কারণ none মানে « একটিও নয় »। কিন্তু ordinary usage-এ plural, বিশেষত যখন none মানে « একাধিক নয় »।
   • None of the students has arrived yet.
     (Traditional)
   • None of the students have arrived yet.
     (Modern usage)
4. Fewer vs Less
   • Fewer → plural countable noun, less → uncountable noun।
   • Spoken English-এ বিভ্রান্তি আছে, তবে formal writing-এ নিয়ম মানা ভাল।
5. Each / Every
   • Every কখনো of + noun-এর সাথে আসে না (each of-এর মতো নয়)।
   • “Every of my friends” বলা যায় না → Every one of my friends বা Each of my friends বলতে হবে।
6. Most / Most of
   • Most people believe...
     (noun without determiner)
   • Most of the people I know...
     (noun with determiner)
7. Verb agreement - a lot of, plenty of...-এর পরে verb noun-এর উপর নির্ভর করে:
   • A lot of books are on the shelf.
   • A lot of sugar is needed.

Conclusion

ইংরেজিতে Quantifier-এর সাহায্যে পরিমাণের সব স্তর প্রকাশ করা যায়-সম্পূর্ণ অনুপস্থিতি থেকে প্রচুর, সাথে সূক্ষ্ম পার্থক্য (প্রায় নেই, কিছুটা, কিছু, অধিকাংশ ইত্যাদি)। এগুলো noun-এর countable/uncountable-এর উপর নির্ভর করে, register (formal/informal) এবং সঠিক nuance প্রকাশ করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

TOEIC®-এর Reading comprehension-এ সাধারণত উপযুক্ত quantifier বাছাই করার দক্ষতা যাচাই করা হয়, যেখানে few / a few, little / a little, much / many-এর পার্থক্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Listening-এ quantifier-এর সূক্ষ্মতা বোঝা সাহায্য করে professional conversation, announcement, email-এ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তথ্য ধরতে।
