The different forms of past in English

In English, there are 2 forms of past:

  • The past simple: Last year, I went to China
  • The past continuous: I was writing when my phone rang

⚠️ In reality, there is also the present perfect and the past perfect which can be forms of past, but we have a dedicated course for these forms

The preterite and past simple are the same thing, they are just two different expressions for saying the same thing.

> The progressive preterite, continuous preterite, past continuous, progressive preterite are also different expressions but they mean the same thing.

These two forms are used in different contexts.

The past simple is used to express:

The past continuous is used to express:

  • an action in progress at a specific moment in the past: I was reading a book at 8 PM last night.
  • an action interrupted by another action: I was cooking when the phone rang.
