Partikkelverbide kursus - TOEIC® ettevalmistus
Partikkelverb (inglise keeles « phrasal verb ») on tegusõna, millele lisatakse väike sõna (sageli up, out, in, off, on, over, away jne). Näiteks « to look » tähendab « vaatama », kuid « to look after » tähendab « hoolitsema / järelvalvet pidama » ja « to look up to » tähendab « imetlema ».
Need partiklitel on oluline roll: need võivad muuta tegusõna tähendust täielikult või anda sellele erilise varjundi. Siin on tüüpiline näide:
- To break : lõhkuma, katki tegema
- To break down : katki minema / emotsionaalselt murduma
- To break in : sisse murdma
- To break up : lahku minema (lõpetama suhte)
1. Kuidas partikkelverbe moodustatakse?
Põhimõte on lihtne: ühendatakse tegusõna ja partikkel. Partikkel võib olla
- Prepositsioon (in, on, at, by, after, for jne).
- To run into someone (kellegagi juhuslikult kohtuma)
- Adverb (up, down, away, off jne).
- To sit down (istuma)
- To go away (lahkuma)
Mõnikord kasutatakse kahte partiklit, moodustades nn phrasal-prepositional verbs.
- To put up with something (millegagi leppima / taluma)
→ siin on partikliteks « up with ».
2. Partikkelverbide erinevad kategooriad
A. Partikkelverbid: transitivsed ja intransitivsed
- Transitivsed: Vajavad objekti (kas otsest või kaudset).
- To put out a fire (tuld kustutama) → « a fire » on objekt.
- To hand in a paper (tööd esitama) → « a paper » on objekt.
- Intransitivsed: Ei vaja objekti.
- To break down (katki minema) → puudub konkreetne objekt.
- To go away (lahkuma) → midagi ei tule tegusõna järele.
DO (Direktne Objekt, est. « otsene sihitis ») täidab tegusõna otse, ilma prepositsioonita. Selle leiab, küsides tegusõna järel "mida?" või "keda?". → Ma söön õuna. → Ma söön MI DA? õuna
KO (Kaudne Objekt, est. « kaudne sihitis ») täidab tegusõna prepositsiooni abil (näiteks: le, de, for jne). Selle leiab, küsides "kellele?", "millele?", "kellelt?", "millelt?" jne. → Ma räägin sõbrale. → Ma räägin KELLELE? sõbrale.
Erand pronoomenidega
Kui objektiks on pronoomen (pronomen), siis see PEAB olema pandud tegusõna ja partikli vahele.
- ✅ I turned it off.
❌ I turned off it. - ✅ She picked him up.
❌ She picked up him. - ✅ Can you put it on?
❌ Can you put on it?
B. Eraldatavad ja eraldamatud partikkelverbid (transitiivsete verbide puhul)
- Eraldatavad: Objekti võib panna kas tegusõna ja partikli vahele või partikli järele.
- To turn off the light = To turn the light off
« off » võib olla pärast « light » või kohe pärast « turn ». - Turn off the TV = Turn the TV off
(lülita televiisor välja) - Pick up the phone = Pick the phone up
(võta telefon vastu)
- To turn off the light = To turn the light off
- Eraldamatud: Objekti ei saa panna tegusõna ja partikli vahele. See peab olema alati pärast partiklit.
- To look after someone
(kellegi eest hoolitsema)- Ei saa öelda « To look someone after ».
- Õige on alati: « I look after my nephew every weekend ».
- To look after someone
C. Kahe partikliga verbid (phrasal-prepositional verbs)
Mõned verbid ühendavad kaks partiklit ja objekt peab alati olema nende järel:
- To put up with something (millegagi leppima / taluma)
- I can't put up with the noise anymore!
- To look forward to something (midagi väga ootama / elevusega ootama)
- I’m looking forward to the holidays.
- To get on with someone (kellegagi hästi läbi saama)
- He gets on with his new colleagues really well.
4. Otsene vs. ülekantud tähendus
Partikkelverbidel võib olla otsene tähendus, mis sarnaneb partiklite tähendusega, või ülekantud tähendus, mis võib algsest verbist täiesti erineda. Seepärast on oluline õppida neid verbe ükshaaval ja tunda sagedasemaid hästi.
- Tähendus sarnane tegusõnale ja partiklile:
- To come in : sisse tulema (otse: « tulema » + « sisse »)
- To go out : välja minema (samamoodi: « minema » + « välja »)
- Ülekantud tähendus (mitte alati ennustatav):
- To bring up a topic : teemat tõstatama, vestluses mainima
- To bring up a child : last kasvatama
- To give up : alla andma, millegi tegemise lõpetama
- To make up a story : lugu välja mõtlema, valetama
- To take off : õhku tõusma (lennuki kohta), või edukalt käima minema
- His career took off suddenly.

Kokkuvõte
Partikkelverbid on olulised oskused igapäevase inglise keele valdamisel ning on väga levinud TOEIC® Reading ja Listening osades. Kuigi nende tähenduste ja struktuuri (eraldatavad/eraldamatud, transitivsed/intransitivsed) mitmekesisus võib alguses tunduda keeruline, aitab harjutamine neid ära tunda ja loomulikult kasutada.
