Liitosanojen kurssi - TOEIC®-valmennus
Liitosanat, joita kutsutaan myös nimillä « linking words » tai « connectors », ovat sanoja, joilla yhdistetään ideoita ja tehdään tekstistä tai puheesta sujuvampaa. Tällä kurssilla käydään läpi tärkeimmät liitosanatyypit, jaoteltuna kategorioittain.
1. Liitosanat, joita käytetään lisäämään tai luettelemaan ideoita
Näillä sanoilla tuodaan esiin uutta tietoa, täydennetään ideaa tai jäsennetään asioita loogiseen järjestykseen (aikajärjestykseen tai tärkeyden mukaan).

Tarkennuksia / Poikkeuksia
- « And » on yksinkertaisin liitosana. Se liittää vain kaksi asiaa tai ideaa yhteen.
- « Beside(s) » voi tarkoittaa « vieressä » prepositiona (esim. "The phone is beside the lamp."), mutta connectorina « besides » tarkoittaa « lisäksi / muuten ».
- Muodot first/firstly, second/secondly jne. ovat vaihdettavissa keskenään, mutta pääte « -ly » tekee muodosta usein muodollisemman.
2. Liitosanat, joilla ilmaistaan syy ja seuraus
Niillä kerrotaan miksi jokin tapahtuu (syy) ja mikä on sen seuraus (vaikutus).

- « So » on hyvin yleinen puhekielessä.
- « Therefore », « thus », « consequently » ja « hence » ovat tyypillisiä muodollisessa tai kirjallisessa kielessä.
- « Due to » ja « owing to » tulevat ennen substantiivia tai gerundi-muotoa.
- The cancellation of the event was due to bad weather.
- Owing to arriving late, he missed the beginning of the movie.

- « Unless » tarkoittaa « ellei », eli lauseessa on epäsuora kielto.
- « I won't go unless... » = « En mene ellei... »
- « Provided (that) » ja « providing (that) » ovat usein vaihdettavissa, mutta « provided that » on yleisempi virallisissa yhteyksissä.

- « To » on helpoin tapa ilmaista tarkoitus, ja sitä seuraa yleensä verbin infinitiivimuoto.
- « So that » ja « in order that » vievät yleensä lauseen, jossa on subjekti ja verbi.
- I explained it clearly so that everyone could understand.

- « Such as » ja « like » tulevat yleensä konkreettisten esimerkkien edellä.
- « e.g. » on latinankielinen lyhenne, jota käytetään pääasiassa muodollisissa ja akateemisissa yhteyksissä, usein suluissa.
- « For example » ja « for instance » ovat vaihdettavissa keskenään, kun annetaan esimerkki.
7. Liitosanat, joilla tiivistetään tai päätellään

- « In conclusion » ja « to conclude » ovat muodollisempia.
- « All in all » ja « in short » ovat hieman puhekielisempiä ja käytetään usein puheessa.

Liitosanat ovat olennaisia rakenteita englannin lauseissa. Ne tekevät puheesta selkeämpää, sujuvampaa ja loogisempaa.
