2.1. Attività in corso

Usiamo il present continuous per descrivere una attività in corso, qualcosa che sta accadendo ora, nel momento in cui si parla. Nel present continuous, l'azione non è ancora terminata.

I'm sorry, Mr. Dupont is not available at the moment. He is talking to a customer.

2.2. Progetti in corso

Utilizziamo anche il present continuous per parlare di azioni, attività e progetti in corso. Queste azioni hanno un inizio e una fine, e possono non svolgersi esattamente nel momento in cui si parla.

Currently, we are working on developing a new software that should revolutionize the market, while continuing to maintain our existing product to satisfy our current customers.

2.3. Situazioni temporanee

Il present continuous viene usato anche per mostrare che un'azione o un'attività è temporanea (e non permanente). Questa attività o azione ha una data di inizio e di fine.

• Mr. Thompson teaches the advanced mathematics course: Il present simple viene utilizzato perché è di solito il suo ruolo.
• Mr. Thompson is recovering from surgery, so Ms. Anderson is teaching the advanced mathematics course: Il present continuous viene utilizzato perché è una situazione temporanea, che ha una data di inizio e di fine.

2.4. Cambiamenti lenti

Il present continuous viene usato per descrivere situazioni in costante evoluzione, tendenze attuali o cambiamenti lenti in corso:

The inflation rate is climbing in South America.

2.5. Esprimere un futuro molto vicino

Il present continuous viene usato anche per esprimere piani in un futuro molto vicino.

I'm meeting her soon. : La incontrerò presto.

3. Consigli TOEIC®: quando utilizzare il present continuous?

3.1. Con avverbi di tempo

Il present continuous viene quasi sempre usato con avverbi di tempo.

Esempi

1. She is studying for her exams at the moment.
2. We are planning a trip to Japan this year.
3. He is still working on the project right now.

3.2. Con always per fare una critica

Quando si vede l'avverbio di frequenza always in una frase, bisogna pensare subito al present simple! Tuttavia, c'è un'eccezione.

Se la frase vuole trasmettere una critica, una emozione negativa, dell'esasperazione, si usa il present continuous per esprimere che la situazione è fastidiosa.

• He always loses his keys : Present simple, è abituale (Perde sempre le chiavi, ci siamo abituati ...)
• He is always losing his keys! : Present continuous - sottinteso « ed è fastidioso! » (Sta sempre perdendo le chiavi, ed è fastidioso!)
