Fjalët lidhëse, të quajtura gjithashtu « linking words » ose « connectors », shërbejnë për të lidhur ide dhe për ta bërë një tekst ose fjalim më të rrjedhshëm. Në këtë kurs, do të shqyrtojmë tipet kryesore të fjalëve lidhëse, të ndara sipas kategorive.
1. Fjalët lidhëse për të shtuar ose renditur ide
Këto fjalë lejojnë prezantimin e një informacioni të ri, plotësimin e një ideje ose strukturojnë pikat sipas një rendi logjik (kronologjik ose sipas rëndësisë).

Nuanca / Përjashtime
- « And » është më elementari ndër fjalët lidhëse. Thjesht lidh dy elemente ose ide.
- « Beside(s) » mund të nënkuptojë « pranë » si Präposition (p.sh. "The phone is beside the lamp."), por si lidhës, « besides » do të thotë « gjithashtu / përveç ».
- Format first/firstly, second/secondly, etj. janë të këmbyeshme, por forma me « -ly » shpesh konsiderohet më formale.
2. Fjalët lidhëse për të shprehur shkakun dhe pasojën
Ato tregojnë pse ndodh diçka (shkaku) dhe cili është rezultati (pasoja).

Nuanca / Përjashtime
- « So » është shumë i përdorur në gjuhën e folur.
- « Therefore », « thus », « consequently » dhe « hence » shpesh përdoren në një regjistër më formal ose të shkruar.
- « Due to » dhe « owing to » përdoren përpara një Nomen ose një Gerund.

Nuanca / Përjashtime
- « Unless » do të thotë « përveç në rast se », kështu që propozita shpreh një negacion implicit.
- « I won't go unless... » = « Nuk do të shkoj përveç në rast se... »
- « Provided (that) » dhe « providing (that) » shpesh janë të këmbyeshme, por « provided that » është më e zakonshme në kontekste formale.

- « So that » dhe « in order that » shpesh futin një fjali që përmban një subjekt dhe një folje.

- « Such as » dhe « like » zakonisht ndiqen nga shembuj konkretë.
- « e.g. » është një shkurtim latin, kryesisht i përdorur në regjistra formalë ose akademikë, shpesh brenda kllapave.
- « For example » dhe « for instance » përdoren në mënyrë të këmbyeshme për të prezantuar një shembull.

- « In conclusion » dhe « to conclude » janë më formale.
- « All in all » dhe « in short » janë disi më informale dhe përdoren shpesh në të folurën.
