1. โครงสร้างของ past continuous (หรือ Präterit Continu)

- สำหรับประโยคบอกเล่า ใช้รูปแบบ ประธาน + was/were + -ing
- สำหรับประโยคปฏิเสธ ใช้รูปแบบ ประธาน + was/were + not + -ing
- สำหรับประโยคคำถาม ใช้รูปแบบ was/were + ประธาน + -ing + ?
ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย
- การใช้ "were" กับบุรุษที่สามเอกพจน์:
- ไม่ถูกต้อง: We were reading a book.
- ถูกต้อง: We was reading a book.
2. เมื่อไหร่ควรใช้ past continuous (หรือ Präterit Continu)?
2.1. กริยาที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในอดีต
โดยทั่วไป Past Continuous ใช้สำหรับพูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในอดีต ณ เวลาหนึ่งที่ระบุไว้
- Yesterday at 8 PM, I was watching a movie.
2.2. กริยาที่โดนขัดจังหวะในอดีต
ต่อเนื่องจากข้อก่อนหน้า Past Continuous ใช้สำหรับพูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในอดีตที่ถูกขัดจังหวะ
- Yesterday at 8 PM, I was watching a movie when my friend called me.
ตัวชี้วัดทางเวลา (Temporal markers) ที่ใช้บ่อยกับ past continuous
คำอย่าง "while", "when", "at that moment" พบได้บ่อยคู่กับ past continuous เพื่อบอกว่าเวลานั้นเกิดอะไรขึ้น หรือใช้บอกระยะเวลาที่กริยาเกิดขึ้น
- While she was waiting for the bus, she met an old friend.
- Josephine was writing on the whiteboard when her phone rang.
- At that moment, Josephine was writing on the whiteboard.
🎯 เคล็ดลับ: หากในประโยค TOEIC® คุณเห็นตัวชี้วัดทางเวลาเหล่านี้ ตามด้วย past simple (she met, rang, ...) คุณสามารถมั่นใจได้ว่า tense ที่ใช้คือ past continuous!
รูปแบบทั่วไปมีดังนี้:
- While \+ past continuous**\,** past simple
- Past continuous, when past simple
- At that moment, past continuous
