英語の過去形のさまざまな形

英語には2つの過去形があります：

• Past Simple（過去形）: Last year, I went to China
• Past Continuous（過去進行形）: I was writing when my phone rang

⚠️ 実際には、present perfect（現在完了）やpast perfect（過去完了）も過去形の一種ですが、それらについては専用のコースがあります。

Prétérit と past simple は同じ意味であり、ただ呼び方が違うだけです。

Prétérit progressif、prétérit continu、past continuous、prétérit progressifも異なる呼び方ですが、すべて同じ意味です。

使用される文脈

この2つの形は、異なる文脈で使われます。

Past Simpleが使われる場面：

• 完全に終了した動作: Last year, I went to China
• 過去に起こった一連の動作: He entered the room, turned on the light, and sat down.
• 過去の習慣: When I was a child, I played outside every day.
• 過去の事実や一般的な真実: In the 19th century, people traveled by horse and carriage.

Past Continuousが使われる場面：

• 過去のある特定の瞬間に進行していた動作: I was reading a book at 8 PM last night.
• 他の動作によって中断された動作: I was cooking when the phone rang.
• 過去に同時に進行していた2つの動作: While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.
• 物語の背景・状況の描写: The sun was setting, and the birds were singing.
