TOEIC®対策・Past Continuous（過去進行形）に関する講座

❓ 「prétérit continu」と「past continuous」は英語で同じ意味です。

1. Past Continuous（過去進行形）の形

• 肯定文の場合は、主語 + was/were + -ing の形を使います。
• 否定文の場合は、主語 + was/were + not + -ing の形を使います。
• 疑問文の場合は、was/were + 主語 + -ing + ? の形を使います。

よくある間違い

• 三人称単数に「were」を使う誤り：
  • 間違い: We were reading a book.
  • 正しい: We was reading a book.

2. Past Continuous（過去進行形）はいつ使う？

2.1. 過去に進行中だった動作

一般的に、Past Continuousは過去のある特定の時点で進行していた動作について話すときに使います。

• 昨日8時、I was watching a movie.

2.2. 過去に途中で中断された動作

前述の内容の続きですが、Past Continuousは、過去に進行していた動作が他の出来事によって中断された場合にも使われます。

• Yesterday at 8 PM, I was watching a movie when my friend called me.

Past Continuousによく使われる時間を示す表現

「while」「when」「at that moment」などの表現は、Past Continuousと一緒によく使われ、動作がいつ、どのくらい続いていたかを示します。

• While she was waiting for the bus, she met an old friend.
• Josephine was writing on the whiteboard when her phone rang.
• At that moment, Josephine was writing on the whiteboard.
  

🎯 コツ：TOEIC®の文中で、これらの時間表現の直後にPast Simple（she met, rangなど）が使われていたら、その文の時制はほぼPast Continuousだと考えて良いでしょう！

一般的な形は次の通りです：

• While \+ past continuous**\,** past simple
• Past continuous, when past simple
• At that moment, past continuous
  

結論

TOEIC®の試験では、Past Continuousの知識が問われる問題が必ずいくつか出題されます。was / were + ingの形で作られること、そして過去の進行中の動作を表すために使うことをしっかり覚えておきましょう。
